Strengthening Access to Research in Brazil: KGL Accucoms and CAPES

At KGL Accucoms, we take immense pride in our longstanding collaboration with CAPES (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior), the Brazilian federal agency responsible for supporting graduate programs and research across the country. Through our mediation, five leading publishers are now featured on the CAPES Portal de Periódicos, providing critical access to scholarly content for thousands of researchers, students, and faculty members in higher education institutions, research centers, and university hospitals throughout Brazil.

The publishers currently represented through this partnership include:

• American Institute of Physics (AIP)

• American Physiological Society (APS)

• American Society for Microbiology (ASM)

• BioOne

• The Royal Society

These publishers bring a wealth of high-impact content to Brazilian academia, supporting a wide range of disciplines including:

• Physics and Applied Sciences

• Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

• Environmental Science and Biodiversity

• Physiology and Biomedical Research

• Mathematics, Chemistry, and Engineering

• Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies

Among these, The Royal Society contract stands out with its transformative agreement, enabling Brazilian authors to publish Open Access with Article Processing Charges (APCs) fully covered. This marks a significant step toward equitable publishing and global visibility for Brazilian research.

Our role in facilitating these negotiations reflects our commitment to bridging publishers and consortia, ensuring sustainable access models and fostering international collaboration. The CAPES Portal de Periódicos remains a cornerstone of Brazil’s academic infrastructure, and we are honored to contribute to its continued evolution.

Anouk Snijders, Commercial Manager for Latin America, reflects on this transition:

“We are very excited to see CAPES transitioning from regular subscriptions towards alternative and more inclusive models, like Read & Publish – and are very happy to actively collaborate and contribute to this transition through our represented publishers. Brazil has traditionally been the top country in the Latin American region in terms of research output, and we are happy to see CAPES further support their research community through agreements that not only include read access, but also the opportunity for Brazilian authors to publish APC-free OA articles in high-impact journals and extend the impact and reach of their research.”

We look forward to continuing our work with CAPES and our publishing partners, expanding access to knowledge and supporting the vibrant research ecosystem in Brazil.
