The Royal Society
Founded in 1660, The Royal Society is the national academy of sciences of the UK and the Commonwealth. The Society plays an influential role in national and international science policy and is dedicated to promoting excellence in science. Fellows and Foreign Members, who are elected for life on the basis of scientific excellence, have included Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Ernest Rutherford, Albert Einstein, Dorothy Hodgkin, Francis Crick, James Watson, Stephen Hawking, and Tim Berners Lee. Today there are approximately 1,450 Fellows and Foreign Members, including more than 80 Nobel Laureates.

Consortia Policy
The Royal Society is available to negotiate agreements with national and local consortia, offering customized packages that takes into consideration multiple factors such as the number of sites involved, with the objective to increase the availability of peer-reviewed content amongst the scientific community.
These are some of the standard parameters used:
- Number of member institutions
- Multiple years contract for three years
- Fixed price cap for the duration of the contract, lower than the standard yearly increase from the publisher’s catalogue
- Perpetual Access guaranteed after the termination of contract
- “Opt-out” clause in case of superior or irresistible force (force majeure)
